Basic Information about components

Capacitor :

Capacitors are made up of metal plates separated by an insulator. Capacitors hold electric charge. A capacitor is a device that is about the same as a rechargeable battery. The difference is that a capacitor can only hold a small fraction of the energy than a battery can. Capacitance is measured in units of Farad (F).

There are two types of Capacitors:

1.    Electrolytic Capacitors - They have polarity

2.    Non-Electrolytic Capacitors - They do not have polarity

Resistors:

Resistors are components that have a predetermined resistance. Resistance determines how much current will flow through a component. Resistors are used to control voltage and current. A very high resistance allows very little current to flow

Light Dependent Resistor (LDR):

These are resistors whose resistance depends on the light falling on them. They offer maximum resistance (2 to 5 Mega Ohms) when there is no light falling on them. When the light is bright, their resistance is as low as 150 Ohms.

Assembly Steps

1)      Take out all material from box tray and keep it aside

2)    Separate all cut-outs provided in the kit

3)    Keep tray upside down and stick green coloured rectangular piece of paper     (appearing as grass) on the flat side of tray using transparent cello tape or glue.

Similarly, stick green strips on two longer sides and one shorter side of the tray.

4)     Prepare house structure from the cut-outs. Make a hole in the place of “handle” of    the door. Fix 'press button' in the hole as door handle.

5)    Now make a hole for LDR wires on top surface of the tray at about 2 inches from     back side. Make one more hole for speaker wires in a corner. Also make a hole of   similar size (to pass two cell holder wires) on the back side wall of the tray.

6)    Take a platform (e.g. exam pad),which is bigger in size than the tray. Place circuit board on top of it. Connect components and wires as per circuit diagram. ( Do not connect cell holder, speaker and LDR)

7)     Hold the tray above circuit board and take out wires (a pair each for connecting   cell holder, speaker and LDR ) from the three different holes. Now place the tray    on top of circuit board carefully.
